What we’re all about
Loren Wood Builders is a family-owned business that works hard to uphold a reputation for quality, client experience, and commitment to our community. We want to help our clients realize their vision for a dream home, updated office space, or renovated and restored structure. Good design and quality craftsmanship are the values that we apply to every project. We place the same importance on each of our team members, creating a positive and engaging workplace that translates to high-quality work.
Every project – whether it’s a large new build or a small remodel – is given the same amount of care and the highest expectations for quality. We take responsibility for every step in the process, from planning and permits to build-out and finishes, making the experience as low-stress as possible for our clients. We work with clients to determine the right design details and materials to fit their values and their budget.
We value our employees as a critical part of our success as a business. We recruit and hire the best, and we do our best to treat our team well. We are committed to paying a living wage, providing a competitive benefits package, and offering profit sharing. Our team members are highly skilled and dedicated, and we are fortunate to have them putting their skills to work for LWB.
Our clients and team are part of our community, and we are dedicated to them all.
Our clients and team are part of our community, and we are dedicated to all of them. We support the efforts of many non-profits in the Bloomington area through sponsorships, donated materials, and services. Quality and care extend beyond our business values, they are also our personal values.

I'm originally from Cleveland, OH. My parents bought a farm when I was nine years old. There I learned to work with my hands. I really enjoyed seeing the progress of a days work. My first job was in a cabinet shop. I went on to work for a third-generation builder, where I really fell in love with woodworking. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside some highly talented craftsmen. I then moved to Bloomington in 2002 where I took a job as a Finish Carpenter. I built a shop where I made custom cabinets, bookcases, and entertainment centers. I'm also a Union Carpenter/Layout Engineer and have worked all over IU campus on various projects, most recently the new Bloomington Hospital. In my free time, I like to mountain bike, that's how I met my wife. We try to get away as often as possible to ride bikes. I've followed LWB for years on social media and really liked the work they do, especially the attention to detail. I contacted them and they generously offered me a position on their very talented team. I'm looking forward to contributing to the Loren Wood Builders Team.

Following initial drawing coursework at the Herron School of Art, at age 20, Russ designed/built his simple “cabin in the woods” off-grid, in Brown County. From this rustic base, Russ engaged in all studio ranges, art and architectural history in fine arts IU Bloomington, later completing a business degree. His career included building the local design/build team Herndon Design, with his lovely, talented wife and partner Shelli. The cumulative art and design aesthetic accrued, I believe for me; continues to hone and keep fresh my creative work while ever balancing restraint. Restraint is beauty and like music. Sometimes the most wonderful piece is a result of the notes one does not play. The best projects remarks Russ; are simplest in design, coupled with streamlined space development and minimal finishes palette. As a first principle, natural light is premium while seamlessly blending the interior space with the out of doors. Outside interests: Boating, working in the garden, playing guitar, and of course: enjoying our wingnut Dachshund, Lowla!
