This project was the second phase (see phase one) in a two-part home renovation. In phase one Lead Architect Ernesto Castañeda worked with the clients to upgrade the primary bedroom, bathroom, and closet space of their 1965 home with age-in-place principles and modern features. 

For the second phase of this project, Ernesto and project designer Tucker Jaroll worked with the clients to remodel the kitchen and exterior, while also adding a new screened-in porch on a refinished deck. 

The previous kitchen was dark and outdated, with a wall separating the dining and living space, making the area feel closed off and cramped. The new design removed the wall while also adding banks of sliding glass doors leading out to the deck and screened porch, as well as, large windows along the south wall of the kitchen.

This resulted in a space that not only feels larger but also improves circulation around the home and allows for more interior natural light throughout the year. The new hard-maple kitchen cabinetry was custom-built by Stoll’s Woodworking and was a key element in revitalizing the space. 

For the exterior, the theme of aging in place was once again addressed. The front door is now accessible from a ramp off of the driveway with a custom railing by Clutch Fabrication. The existing siding was replaced with wide plank fiber cement and painted a light gray for a more modern look. The existing wood decking was replaced with Trex decking, also gray, matching the siding and creating a cohesive look. 

The new screened porch and extended deck breathe new life into this house. By extending the once very narrow deck to twelve feet deep, we were able to offer so much more outdoor space to enjoy. Also, another visually interesting feature of this screened porch lies in the exposed roof structure with integrated LED lighting. An I-beam installed by Clutch Fabrication was set below the deck with steel posts to bear the porch. This allows for a visually sleek and modern look that plays well with the horizontal planes of the home.

Being the second remodel phase, it has been exciting seeing the house transform and modernize. The result is a more livable and visually appealing residence that the clients will be able to enjoy for years to come.
