Custom Cedar Pergola & Gate

Custom Cedar Pergola & Gate

Our client’s need for a pergola and outdoor space allowed Tucker Jaroll and Russ Herndon to “give the house a voice”. The main challenge here was to moderate a harsh western exposure, while not disrupting the beautiful view of the valley, hills, and upward angle sight line for big sky sunsets. Our design team identified the sweet spot for the structure’s roof angle via a solar analysis, allowing the winter sun to still filter into the space while minimizing the direct summer sun. Our team also constructed a pivoting hinged gate element at the carport, providing a visual screen from the drive, or in the open position the covered protection of a carport.

Post and Beam Screened Porch

We created an outdoor kitchen space for our current client’s mother at this home a few years ago. This spring our architects, Ernesto and Tucker, were asked to design a screened room addition. We explored a few different options and locations for the screen porch before landing on the final design, in which we extended an existing gable bump out with a cedar post and beam approach. With both of our clients working from home, as well as home-schooling, this renovation allowed for some much-needed flex space for their various work and school needs, as well as potential guest space, when needed.

Limestone Garage Renovation

Limestone Garage Renovation

This project was phase two of an earlier addition to this small home in the Bryan Park neighborhood. A recent change to our local zoning restrictions allowed us to design a renovation of the original (but distressed) limestone garage and turn it into an ADU (accessory dwelling unit). The project consisted of taking what was a very small and very rough garage and repurpose it as a small overflow space for the home.

Attic Addition & Remodel

This client approached us with the need for a home office that would work as a standalone creative space while providing easy access to and from the rest of the home. Our client’s initial thoughts were to build a second story over a detached garage. However, during the design phase, it became clear that raising the ceiling over the attached garage would provide easier access to the main living space in the home, minimize cost, and maximize views of the horizon to the east. We are really pleased with the form, feel, and function of the finished space.

These homeowners contacted us to help them design and build an addition on the backside of their Bloomington home. During the design process, our architects Ernesto Castaneda and Alex Minor, met with the clients multiple times to discuss their wishlist and project timeline. The team was able to design an addition that featured a larger, relocated kitchen over a finished basement and a deck was designed to access the yard from the kitchen via double doors.

These clients loved their existing home and location, however wanted to update the home and add-on to the existing space to optimize the function and layout. The design solution by Alex Minor and Russ Herndon included a new addition, a new primary suite with bedroom and bath, and a large open kitchen/dining/living area to fit their lifestyle and gatherings needs.
