Custom Staircase

We were approached by clients wanting a modern update to their staircase. After speaking with them about the look they desired, we knew that we could help them turn the mundane into something special. Instead of carpet and bulky handrails, they wanted hardwood stairs with black steel railings capped with hardwood. The stair design was a collaboration between our clients and our finish carpenter, Thaddeus Walker. We designed and built custom made prototypes of the stair treads which had different traction and radius details so that they could decide what felt most comfortable. We fabricated and finished the hard maple treads, black walnut risers, and hard maple handrails in our shop and strategically placed traction strips of silica sand applied to cabinet grade finish. Clutch Fabrication built and installed the custom black steel railings.

During the process, we ran into framing issues on the stairs and the landing that we had to correct to ensure that our stairs were level and flat. We also removed the carpet from the upstairs landing, laid maple engineered flooring, and repainted the area to freshen up the space.
