Lake Monroe 1
This home, situated at the end of a winding drive down by lake Monroe, represents some of our best efforts in custom home building. From the interior woodworking to the exterior hardscaping, every element of this home is highly specific to these homeowners’ needs and goals.
There were three driving focuses in this home. The first was accessibility. To ensure full accessibility, we included multiple curb-less showers, an elevator that services all floors, as well as a dumb-waiter for wine cellar access. In addition, all porches and exterior spaces are on plane with the interior finished floor surfaces allowing for ease of wheelchair access. Beyond that, the lighting and electronics of the home were designed with the same goal of accessibility; a control 4 system allows all lighting and electronics to be controlled from a smart-phone or tablet. The second main focus for the clients was the woodworking in the home, including walnut and hickory hardwood floors, custom hardwood trim and doors and the highly custom cabinetry and built-ins. All of the cabinets and interior doors and jambs were custom-built and designed by local furniture maker Kirby Melick, while all of the interior trim was milled and finished on-site by Rick McCanse, Robert Stright, and Russell Wyatt, all members of the LWB crew.
The third focus of the home was comfort and energy efficiency. While these features are too many to list, a short list of highlights includes:
-Radiant floor heat on all 3 floors and garage
-Geothermal systems that provide all heating and cooling, including the floor heat, as well as domestic hot water
-Structural insulated panels for all of the roof structures
-Robust spray-foam package, as well as a continuous layer of foam around the outside of the stud framing to create a continuous thermal break
-A large grid-tied solar array that occupies the upper roof plane and the garage roof
-Energy recovery ventilators for all floors to ensure the highest standard of air quality
