In the mid-1970s there existed 33 acres under glass in the form of huge cypress and glass greenhouses near Terre Haute. Our client’s father, along with many other craftsmen and homesteaders, salvaged these components when the commercial greenhouses were decommissioned. From this material, our client’s father built an attached 18/12 pitch/angle to harvest the southern sun. Last year our client again reached out to LWB to undertake a remodel of this space while retaining a portion of the now 50-year-old greenhouse system that her father had installed when he salvaged it back in the 70s. LWB designed a new office space within the greenhouse (opening the rest of the house to this wonderful south light) including re-building a position of the old cypress and glass greenhouse system on the west end of the roof structure. The design team challenge led by Alex Minor and Russ Herndon was to reach into the large greenhouse space with an office structure delivering the insulative and comforts of technology while controlling this huge heat gain potential.
We were brought on during the early design phase of this very exciting restaurant buildout in the Elm Heights neighborhood. We were thrilled to be brought onboard with Lauren Bordes and Evan Cerilli of Malane Benedetto to work with them through the design and buildout phase to help realize their vision. The building had sent vacant for some time before our clients purchased the building and started the journey down the road towards designing and building out the next iteration of a neighborhood gathering place.
We purchased this 100-year-old limestone building in mid-2020 to be our new LWB headquarters. It had originally been built by The Bloomington Limestone Company for use as their main offices and drafting center. Aside from the centralized location, some of the things that appealed to us most about this building were the beautiful original limestone work and the functionality of the space. Beyond that, the building had never been renovated and aside from some floor coverings and paint, the entire building was in its original form and condition. All of the original woodwork, door hardware, and windows remained intact. Over the last two years, we have refurbished the entire building, while keeping all of the original exterior windows and door hardware and doing our best to clean them up and repair them, as needed.
This project was phase two of an earlier addition to this small home in the Bryan Park neighborhood. A recent change to our local zoning restrictions allowed us to design a renovation of the original (but distressed) limestone garage and turn it into an ADU (accessory dwelling unit). The project consisted of taking what was a very small and very rough garage and repurpose it as a small overflow space for the home.
With both of our clients working from home, as well as home-schooling, this renovation allowed for some much-needed flex space for their various work and school needs, as well as potential guest space, when needed.
Over the last 6 years, we have been renovating this beautiful home. The first phase was a gut and remodel of the entire home. The second phase is the transformation of the previously unfinished attic space into a home office, and the final phase being the garage addition. For this final portion, the homeowners hired Springpoint Architects, who did a beautiful job of putting together a design that provided a garage with entrance into the existing basement, a main floor screen porch and patio, complete with a green roof over the remainder of the garage, and finally a balcony above the screen porch that is accessible from the second floor of the home.
We enjoy supporting the local arts in Bloomington and had the pleasure of working on a remodel with Bloomington Center for Creative Glass. The remodel was focused on their “hot shop” where glass will be blown and fused. The project was made more interesting by the fact that the space was previously used for light industrial and several changes had to be planned to support the added power consumption of the various kilns and glass blowing equipment.
