MODERN MEETS WOODS

Our clients, lovers of outdoor activities and entertaining, wanted to create a home that seamlessly blended indoor and outdoor living. Their primary home, nestled deep in the woods, needed remodeling and updating throughout, and also included an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on the property, which was designed to reflect the client’s interests in mountain biking and grilling.

The ADU serves as a hub for outdoor adventures. It includes a place for storing mountain bikes, a workshop, and an outdoor shower, perfect for washing off after a ride. The design also includes a cozy upstairs living area with a full kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible sleeping space separated by a custom sliding slat wall for privacy. A new exterior staircase and porch bring in natural light and offer views of the nearby fishing pond, exterior water features, a wood-fired hot tub, and surrounding woods, all connected by walking paths and flagstone; improving the connection with the outdoors.

The main house was redesigned to bring in more light, particularly by removing interior walls and installing a steel beam to create an open-plan layout. Large windows and grading adjustments further brightened the space. The main floor features a spacious dining area with a fireplace, a secondary kitchen with a tri-fold pass-through window that opens up to a large grilling patio for easy entertaining, and a bedroom with an additional flexible sleeping area. The second floor, features the primary suite, open kitchen, and a large living area with a wood-burning stove. The modern kitchen is open and bright, with sliding glass doors to the patio. The primary bath was updated to create a spa-like atmosphere, with a floating sink and large windows that offer privacy while providing natural views.

The new stairwell features a custom open steel design and a slatted privacy wall that ties in with the ADU’s aesthetic. The addition of large windows in the stairwell ensures the space is flooded with natural light throughout the day. The exterior was updated with green fiber cement shingles to blend with the natural surroundings, while still honoring the home’s mid-century style.
