The Applegate Building

Located on 6th Street in Bloomington, Indiana, the Applegate Building was a special project for our team. Originally built in 1939, the building was relocated in 1995 from what is now the site of the Downtown Monroe County Library. As part of the library’s development, it was carefully preserved and moved to its current site, where it was placed on a modern poured-concrete foundation with a new basement, setting the stage for the extensive remodel to come.

This project was completed for longtime clients with whom we’ve had the privilege of working on several past projects, including the FAR Gallery and The Elm Restaurant. When they reached out again, this time to reimagine the Applegate Building, we knew it would be both a creative and meaningful collaboration.

Design and interiors led by Susan Yeley Interiors (SYH), the project was guided by one simple yet powerful goal: happiness. From the start, the design process focused on creating a space that felt bright, inspiring, and adaptable. It was a blend of modern sensibilities with the historical charm of the original structure, with bright interiors, custom-built-ins, and clever use of natural light. SYH delivered exceptional interior design, shaping a cohesive and vibrant environment that perfectly reflects the clients’ vision.

The project came with its fair share of complexity. The basement was transformed into a multifunctional hub with a photography studio, art storage, and collaborative workspaces. The second floor now serves as a compact apartment, complete with custom-built-ins, a fully functional kitchen, a cozy living space, and a quiet bedroom—all carefully designed to make intentional use of every inch.

Throughout the project, our team focused on preserving key historic elements while integrating new systems and details that meet modern needs. It’s a true adaptive reuse effort and one that reflects the kind of work we love. The result is a seamless blend of old and new, crafted with care and precision.

Today, the Applegate Building is home to office space, creative studios, and storage, all wrapped in what the client described as a “bright and happy” atmosphere. It’s a place that serves many roles, both personal and professional, and it stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, collaborative partnerships, and lasting client relationships.
