Veranda-Style Screened Porch
We relished the chance to work on this beautiful home near Bloomington’s Griffy Lake. Built by renowned local homebuilder Tim Laughlin, the house features a beautiful backyard that our clients enjoyed from their existing deck. LWB partnered with our clients to design a screened porch in place of the aging composite decking structure.
One challenge that designers Ernesto Castaneda and Tucker Jaroll faced was re-creating a veranda-stye approach to the screened porch– the clients want to keep a wide area available for staging plants. We used a screen system that allowed for floor-to-ceiling screening for optimal viewing of the lush gardens and plantings.
We demolished the existing deck and poured a new concrete floor with wide steps. In doing so, we re-worked the backyard drainage. The framing and trim were all cedar, treated with oil. The stoop for the back door was made of walnut since it was primarily out of the weather. The clients chose standing seam metal for the roof. One of the construction challenges of this project was the scribing of trim and the cutting of the original stone block that was needed to tie in the porch to the house.
